What is Allergic Rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is a widespread allergic condition affecting millions globally. Characterized by an overreaction of the immune system to certain allergens, it is marked by symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and itchy eyes. These symptoms arise when the body encounters allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, triggering the release of histamines and other chemicals that cause inflammation in the nasal passages. Seasonal allergic rhinitis, caused by outdoor allergens like pollen from trees, grass, or weeds, typically occurs in spring, summer, or fall. Perennial allergic rhinitis, on the other hand, occurs year-round due to indoor allergens like dust mites, mold, or animal dander. While not life-threatening, allergic rhinitis can significantly impair quality of life, disrupting sleep and daily activities.

Management of allergic rhinitis involves a combination of prevention and treatment strategies. Avoidance of known allergens is the first step, though it's not always practical, especially for airborne substances. Over-the-counter medications like antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroids are commonly used to alleviate symptoms. Antihistamines help reduce sneezing, itching, and runny nose, while decongestants relieve nasal stuffiness. Nasal corticosteroids are particularly effective in reducing inflammation in the nasal passages. For severe cases, allergen immunotherapy, which involves gradually exposing the body to larger amounts of allergens to build tolerance, can be an effective long-term treatment. Additionally, regular nasal irrigation with saline solutions can help clear the nasal passages of allergens. It's also advisable for individuals to monitor pollen or mold counts and limit outdoor activities during high allergen periods. With proper management, most people with allergic rhinitis can lead normal, symptom-free lives.
