What is Adenoidectomy?

Adenoid surgery, also known as adenoidectomy, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the adenoids, small masses of lymphatic tissue located in the back of the nasal cavity. Adenoids play a role in the immune system, particularly during childhood, helping to trap pathogens that enter through the nose. However, they can become problematic if they enlarge or become chronically infected. Enlarged adenoids can block the airways, leading to breathing difficulties, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea. Chronic infections can result in recurrent ear infections and sinusitis, significantly impacting a child's quality of life.

The decision to proceed with adenoid surgery is typically made by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. The procedure is most commonly performed in children, as adenoids tend to shrink and become less significant in the immune system by adolescence. Indications for adenoidectomy include chronic infections that do not respond to medical treatment, significant enlargement of the adenoids causing obstructive symptoms, and in combination with tonsillectomy for treating sleep apnea. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and is relatively quick, taking about 30 minutes. The recovery period is typically short, with most children returning to normal activities within a few days. Post-operative care includes managing pain with medications and ensuring adequate hydration. While adenoidectomy is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries risks such as bleeding, infection, and reaction to anesthesia. The overall complication rate is low, making it a commonly recommended procedure for children with problematic adenoids.
