What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is defined as snoring and respiratory arrest during sleep. Poor quality sleep can cause complaints such as wandering around while sleeping continuously during the day, lack of concentration, and can cause many diseases. Sleep apnea is caused when the muscles in the throat relax to cover the area where air passes. If obesity is in question, the first thing to do in sleep apnea treatment is to overcome this situation. The sleep apnea test, called polysomnography, is a test that records brain activity and respiratory events all night long. If there are significant anatomical stenoses in the upper respiratory tract, the patient should be evaluated by an otolaryngologist in terms of surgical intervention. In the treatment of severe sleep apnea, positive air pressure (CPAP) therapy should be applied.

People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain and the rest of the body — may not get enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the more common of the two and is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep. In contrast, central sleep apnea is not caused by a blockage but occurs because the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, due to instability in the respiratory control center.

Sleep apnea can affect anyone at any age, although it is more common in men and people over the age of 40. Being overweight also increases the risk. It's not just a snoring issue; sleep apnea can have serious health consequences. Symptoms include loud snoring, episodes of breathing cessation during sleep witnessed by another person, abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath, awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), attention problems, and irritability. The disruption in normal breathing patterns leads to poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness. Moreover, sleep apnea is linked to several serious health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression. It's important to diagnose and treat sleep apnea. Treatments for sleep apnea are varied and depend on the severity of the disorder and the underlying cause. Common treatments include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and smoking cessation, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, mouthpieces, breathing devices, and in some severe cases, surgery. It is essential for individuals who suspect they might have sleep apnea to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
