What is Reflux Treatment Surgery?

Reflux treatment surgery, commonly known as anti-reflux surgery, is a medical procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the tube connecting the mouth and stomach (esophagus). This backwash (acid reflux) can irritate the lining of the esophagus, causing discomfort and potential complications. The most widely recognized surgical procedure for GERD is the Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication. In this procedure, the surgeon wraps the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus to reinforce the esophageal sphincter, the muscle ring at the lower end of the esophagus. This reinforcement prevents acid and other stomach contents from flowing back up.

The decision to opt for reflux treatment surgery is usually made when lifestyle changes and medications have not sufficiently alleviated symptoms, or when the patient wishes to avoid long-term medication use. Candidates for this surgery often have severe or chronic GERD symptoms, such as heartburn, regurgitation, and respiratory problems. The surgery is minimally invasive, performed using a laparoscope – a thin tube with a camera – which allows for smaller incisions, leading to reduced recovery time and lower risk of complications compared to traditional open surgery. Post-surgery, most patients experience significant relief from GERD symptoms and a reduction in the need for acid-suppressing medications. However, as with any surgery, there are risks involved, including difficulty swallowing, gas bloat syndrome, and potential changes in bowel habits. Patients considering this surgery should discuss the risks and benefits with their healthcare provider to determine if it is the right option for them.
