Although there are many factors believed to be associated with rectal prolapse, no clear determining factor has been identified. The dominant defecation habit is accompanied by constipation in thirty-sixty five percent of the patients and diarrhea in fifteen percent. It can be seen in both men and women. Various surgical repair methods have been developed for rectal prolapse. These include removing a part of the large intestine and stitching the remaining ends together, and fixing the rectum by hanging it back for the abdomen. Most of the patients experience improvement in their complaints after surgery.
